Jiři Georg Dokoupil

„New soap bubble paintings and a few made of lapis lazuli“

Exhibition 13.11.2021 – 15.01.2022

The Martina Kaiser Gallery is pleased to announce the second grand solo exhibiton with new works from Georg Dokoupil. After his stunning show in 2020 during DC Open he will now present “New soap bubble paintings and a few made of lapis lazuli” while at the same time we will showcase his latest works at Cologne Fine Art & Design fair from November, 17th till 21st.

With the exhibition two circles are symbolically closed: First, the exhibition marks the home coming of Dokoupil whose career began in this white cube – formerly run by gallerist Paul Maenz - in the early 1980ies. Second, his return coincidences with the 10th anniversary of Martina Kaiser Gallery.

The exhibition “New soap bubble paintings and a few made of lapis lazuli” focusses on Dokoupils iconic cycle, which is based on soap bubbles enclosing pigments and stands as the artist’s unique position feature. This time Dokoupil has chosen the legendary lapis lazuli stone and its’ ultramarine pigment for the coloration of his soap bubbles. Both lapis lazuli and the extracted ultramarine share a long history in art and human culture, belonging to the worlds most wanted and most expensive materials over centuries, yet thousands of years. The outstanding blue tone symbolized the divine and the wonder of life and was used either used for jewellery and decoration in ancient Sumerian and Egyptian times or later as pigment for the grand painters of the early renaissance such as Giotto and Fra Angelico. As it stood for God and sacred matters the old masters used ultramarine to paint skies and the typical coat of Virgin Mary. Dokoupil pays his tribute to the ancient color by embedding it into his soap bubble-cycle hence transferring it into the contemporary context. This culminates in both passionate and bewitching paintings which “crawl under your skin” (Dokoupil) with their sensitive mat finish. In stark contrast to the artificial, literally onomatopoeic ultramarine that Yves Klein has used for his works, Dokoupil’s organic, persistent and non-fading lapis lazuli driven ultramarine radiates silence and grandeur. The artist compares the natural patina of the most sublime ultramarine extract, the so-called Fra Angelico pigment (named after the old renaissance master), poetically with “dried blood, but in blue”. And with these words he targets both the physical and the spiritual power of the mythical color.

In some of his works Dokoupil confronts the cool, subtle aura of the lapis lazuli blue with the differing temperature of gold pigments which creates a symbiosis of colors that left their mark like no other on the canon of ancient and Christian art.

The exhibition presents both works on paper and paintings which are shown for the first time. So it’s a premiere of its’ own building the perfect frame for the anniversary of the Martina Kaiser Gallery. (Yorca Schmidt-Junker)

Jiři Georg Dokoupil (*1954 in Krnov, former Czechoslovakia) was a member of the legendary German artist group „Mülheimer Freiheit“ and belongs to the most complex contemporary artists. Till today he evades from any common genre or category. As an alchemist and pioneer of post-conceptual painting he dedicates himself to new techniques and choses soap bubble catchers as well as candles and tyres as working materials instead of a brush which he stopped to use since 1986. His favorite materials though are soap, its’ foam and soot. After his studies in Cologne, Frankfurt and New York, where he connected with Hans Haacke, he joined the “Mülheimer Freiheit” group in Cologne. He became one of the most prominent members being fostered by renowned gallerists such as Paul Maenz and Bruno Bischofberger. His first solo shows took place in Cologne (1981), followed by Zurich and New York where Mary Boone (1983), Leo Castelli (1985) and Ileana Sonnabend (1986) were among his patrons. In 1982 he joined both the documenta 7 in Kassel and the 40. Venice Biennale and was also part of the iconic exhibition “Zeitgeist” in Berlin. Since then he had exhibitions all over the world, feat. Museum Groningen/NL, Art Museum Luzern/CH, Folkwang Museum Essen/FRG (all in 1984), later at the MUMOK Vienna/AUT (1997), the Château de Chenonceau/FR (1999), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia Madrid/ESP (2002), National Gallery Prague/CZE and Deichtorhallen Hamburg/FRG (both in 2005). In 2012 he was awarded the Lovis- Corinth-Prize. His works can be found in public collections like Centre Pompidou, Paris/France, Museum Ludwig, Cologne/Germany, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea in Seoul as well as in private collections all over the world. Dokoupil lives and works in Berlin, Madrid, Prague und Rio de Janeiro.

Georg Dokoupil – Works on Paper

DC-Open Galleries 2019

(Yorca Schmidt-Junker)
